Thyroid disease is common that can affect any gender. But it is women who are more at risk for developing this disease and two most common symptoms women face when they have thyroid problem is weight gain and depression. The thyroid is gland located in front of the neck, just below the larynx it is the most important gland that produces thyroid hormones which plays a major role in controlling bodily functions. Thyroid gland is controlled by pituitary gland (a small gland located at the base of the brain) which triggers thyroid glands to produce thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronoine (T3) that controls various functions of the body like – metabolism, growth, and development, use of energy and body temperature and others.
One of the most important roles of the thyroid gland is to take iodine from the food we consume and convert it into thyroid hormones. Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body which has the ability to absorb iodine and combine it with amino acid to make T3 and T4. Thyroid disease occurs when the thyroid glands become either underactive (hypothyroidisms) or overactive (hyperthyroidism).
Hypothyroid in Women:
Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is most commonly observed in women, it happens when the body does not make sufficient thyroid hormones that are thyroxin (T4); this hormone plays a crucial part in the bodily functions like growth, digestion, promotes metabolism, controls weight and other functions.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism in women, Sensitive to cold weather, Dry skin, Dry hair, Weight gain, Irritability, Depression, Poor memory, High cholesterol, Constipation, Slow heart rate, Fatigue
Causes of Hypothyroid in Women:
Inflammation of thyroid gland or thyroiditis, Hashmito’s disease an autoimmune disease, Certain medications, Abnormality in pituitary glands, Imbalance in iodine Radiation, Pregnancy, Problem in thyroid glands, Hypothalamus disorder, Thyroid surgery
These are some of the causes of hypothyroid in women.
Hyperthyroid in women:
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which the body releases excess amounts of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. It can affect your metabolism.
Symptoms of hyperthyroid in women:
Weight loss, Mood swings, Sleep problems, Fatigue, Rapid heartbeat, Hand tremors, Diarrhea, Anxiety, Scanty periods, Dry skin, Irregular heartbeat, Causes of hyperthyroid in women, Autoimmune disorder, Inflammation of thyroid, Tumour in ovaries, Presence excess of iodine, Tumor in thyroid gland or pituitary gland.
These are some of the causes of hyperthyroidism in women.
